Celebrating Our Educators

Six educators holding kete Our annual Tohu (awards) celebrate the incredible mahi our Educators do to uplift tamariki, support schools and inspire each other. This year, we proudly recognised six outstanding team members whose passion, resilience, and effort embody the spirit of Life Ed.

The Rearea Tohu, celebrating early growth and potential, was awarded to Lara Jansen van Vuuren (Auckland Central). Lara brings calm, connection, and a can-do spirit to every challenge and has quickly become a trusted face in her region.

Kelly Simpson (West Coast) received the Ākina Tohu, which celebrates courage and embracing challenge. From traversing remote roads to handling unexpected visitors (like a horse at the classroom door!), Kelly’s energy and determination are unmatched.

For outstanding impact in her region, the Taumata rau Tohu was awarded to Nicky Wise (Waipā King Country). Her deep knowledge, powerful teaching presence, and commitment make a lasting impression on all she meets.

The Raukura Tohu went to Shanna Forsythe (Far North), who also made a remarkable impact in her expansive and often remote region. Shanna may be low-key, but feedback from schools shows her lessons meet all childrens’ needs and are highly engaging.

Recognising mahi that extends beyond the classroom, the Karamata Tohu was presented to Brooke Nightingale (Hutt Valley). From mentoring new Educators to pioneering Early Childhood and Secondary initiatives, Brooke’s leadership is inspiring.

The Educators themselves voted Beau Harrison (Gisborne) winner of the Educator Recognition Award. Beau was described by his peers as a gentle leader who generously shares his knowledge of te reo and tikanga Māori.
