The Whanganui Regional LET covers the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Ruapehu regions. Established in 1994, our Trust delivers the ‘Healthy Harold’ Life Education programme across this area, reaching over 4,500 children every year from 50+ primary schools. Life Education provides tamariki and rangatahi with knowledge and strategies to help them make positive choices for their health and wellbeing.
Along with our ‘Healthy Harold’ programme and high school theatre based workshops, we also provide teacher professional development. Our ‘Healthy Harold’ programme is delivered via our mobile classroom and reaches the majority of schools in the Whanganui District. We run our programme by taking children on an adventure inside the classroom which is equipped with sight and sound equipment designed to capture and engage children’s imaginations.
‘Healthy Harold’ is broken up into five different strands – food and nutrition, human biology, substances, relationships and communities and identity and resilience. Each school that we visit are able to choose what they would like to focus on, thus ensuring we are relevant for the issues that their tamariki are facing currently.
Children are excited to enter our mobile classroom where they have fun, engaging, memorable and unique learning experiences. Mark, our fabulous Educator, takes children on this journey along with Harold the giraffe, our loveable mascot.
Being a part of our local community, Harold attends many community focused events, including ‘Mitre 10 Tough Kids’ and community Christmas parades, where he is excitedly received by children and adults!
We have many volunteer superstars in our community who help us deliver the Life Education programme to schools within Whanganui and our surrounding Districts. We rely heavily on community organisations for backing and support as we are not government-funded. If you wish to know more about the work we are doing with our local tamariki and how you may be able to help, please reach out, we would love to hear from you!
