Questions

  • How can I be a good friend?
  • Students discuss what a good friend is, and how to develop the qualities to enable strong and positive relationships with others.
  • What does it take to be part of a team?
  • Children will explore the qualities that will help them to be a positive team member

Lesson Overview

    Pre visit Activities:

    • Discuss the mobile Learning environment. Emphasise the importance of safety around the outside of the classroom such as don't go under the truck or touch the safety barriers.
    • Brainstorm different TEAMS students belong to.

Mobile Classroom Learning (this is what we may cover):

    • We meet Harold and discover that Zebra wasn't being a very kind friend to him and didn't show good sportsmanship.
    • Students will explore differences and similarities within the class leading to a discussion about our personality (How we feel, how we act, what we think and what we do).
    • We discover we may all feel differently about the same thing. "Not wrong, just different from me." We are all unique.
    • Watch AV: Harold at the park with his friends. How did Rabbit feel about the jungle gym? Were the others being kind friends to her?
    • Kind friends do/don't activity.
    • Small group brainstorm to find out qualities and actions needed in a good team member. Notice the similarities to what kind friends do.

    Future Learning:

    • Read " First Week Blues" a book written by a New Zealand author, Jesse Greenslade. This is available to borrow from the Mobile Classroom on request.
    • Students write or draw about actions and qualities they already have to enable them to be a team member. What is one they would like to work on?
    • Check out the resources and links at www.lifeeducation.org.nz to support learning, including those below.

  • On The Team

This level 1 classroom activity (whole class and partner work) looks at being part of a sports team and all the people that are involved and their roles, even those behind the scenes to make it happen. Students can also look at other kinds of teams or groups they may be involved in.

  • My New Team

This level 2 classroom activity (pair, group and class work) looks at group dynamics and the importance of realising that we all bring different skills and experiences to group situations.

  • Same but Different

Everyone is different, no two people are exactly the same.  This Level 2 classroom activity looks at what we may have in common but also what makes us different.  With a partner using a Venn diagram, children can compare how similar and different their personalities are.

  • How can I make friends?

Friends share. They respect each other, support each other … and have fun together. Everyone in a friendship needs to put in equal effort to make it happen and keep it going.

  • Leadership and Teamwork

When we are part of a group of people who share skills and work together to achieve a common goal, we are part of a team. This information looks at the skills involved in being a great team member or leader. It discusses reliability, communication, flexibility, focus and being respectful. It also looks at different types of teams and how to be a good leader.

  • Talent Time

This Level 2 classroom activity (whole class or individual work) celebrates that we are all good at different things, that we all have our own strengths or talents.
