Drugs and Alcohol
Drug and alcohol addiction is a brain disease. Although initial use might be voluntary, drugs of abuse have been shown to alter gene expression and brain circuitry, which in turn affect our behaviour. Once addiction develops, these brain changes interfere with a person's ability to make voluntary decisions, leading to compulsive drug craving, seeking and use. Words, thoughts and behaviour become dictated by the drug. Drugs might temporarily provide a false sense of happiness, but for every high, there's a low, and they can get lower, and lower, and lower.
I've written these pages on addiction, drugs and alcohol with the help of the people from Life Education to help us make wise choices, and to help us get through our teen years so we become the man or woman we want to be, and have a healthy, happy life.
