Life Education in Nelson/Tasman

Nelson/Tasman established a Life Education Community Trust in November 2002. This was made possible by patrons Roy and Renate Savage gifting a mobile classroom to the community to enable the Trust to be started.

Since its inception the Nelson/Tasman mobile classroom has visited over 95% of the primary and intermediate schools in the region – including Motueka, Riwaka and Golden Bay. The programme has been extremely well-received such that our mobile classroom now has a fully-booked schedule of schools from one end of Nelson/Tasman to the other, teaching some 19 age-related programmes, and along with Harold has become a highly visible and popular identity within the community.

We are fortunate to employ Victoria Hawke , our qualified, trained and highly regarded educator whose energy and commitment is a key factor in the quality of and on-going requests for the Life Education programme at our local schools.

In Nelson/Tasman our programme is dependent on the support of a vital group of local sponsors whose contributions by way of funding and services help us to deliver the programme to schools at a highly subsidised rate ($3.00 per child, actual cost approximately $12.50 per child) so that all pupils have the opportunity to attend.

Our sponsors are true partners in our programme – we encourage and create opportunities for their participation in our community activities and value their commitment to our goals. Without these partnerships the Life Education programme could not operate in Nelson/Tasman:

Sponsors
• Southpine
• Radio Nelson Classic Hits
• Fitzgerald Construction Ltd
• Sollys Contractors Golden Bay
• Placemakers
• Oldridge Electrical
• Design Windows
• Accessman
• The Signman
• Ching Contracting
• City Fitness
• Bowater Toyota
• Gen-i Nelson

In 2008 Life Education Nelson/Tasman raised over $120,000 to enable the mobile classroom to be upgraded to the latest Second Generation model. This was no easy feat, but thanks certainly go to the community support and our regular sponsors. Our target is to raise 60% of our operating costs through sponsorship within the local communities in which we operate; raising the remainder through fund-raising activities and donations. Because we are a volunteer organisation, all funds raised go towards programme delivery in our region.

Feedback from Nelson/Tasman School Principals

A selection of the very positive feedback Life Education Nelson/Tasman receives from local schools:

“Our Syndicate from Henley School (Year 5/6) took part in the ‘Brainy Bunch’ module. Each child took away knowledge that will assist them in making healthy choices for the future. Helen the educator was awesome and really spoke at the level needed for children. She made it an action packed hour and half with lessons broken up with fun games. Thankyou for providing us with this fun opportunity.”
Amy Chippendale, Senior Syndicate Teacher, Henley School, Nelson. 23/7/09

"The programme makes an impact. It gives kids the knowledge and strategies to make the right choices, and they love it"
Justin Neal, Principal, Mahana School, 24/7/09

“The class comes alive for our special needs students. They are engaged with all the activities.”
Acushla Murphy, Salisbury School, Teacher, 23/7/09

“The children of Tahunanui School just love Harold’s visits each year. He has so much to teach them and does so in an interactive, fun and unforgettable way. His assistant, Helen, brings him to life to share his songs, stories and healthy messages.”
