Life Education Learning Modules

Air To Live (Year 1 & 2)

Outline Harold invites the students to accompany him to a beach where they meet some divers.  The oxygen cycle is introduced.  TAM discusses breathing.  The programme also introduces things which pollute the air and how to ensure we breathe clean air for ourselves.
Key messages
  • The environment directly impacts on our lives, therefore we need to look after it.
Focus
  • It is important for the human body to breathe in clean fresh air.
  • There are several body parts involved in helping us to breathe.
“We are learning to…”
  1. State that air contains oxygen and that oxygen gives us energy.
  2. Name the basic things that keep us alive.
  3. Identify things that make it harder to breathe (get clean air into the body/describe how polluted air affects our body).
The learning module delivered might look like this:

Part A

  • Catch up with Harold and find out he is off to the beach
  • Focus on breathing and oxygen
  • Hear from TAM telling us about the respiratory system
  • Do Harold’s homework together - making a respiration cycle

Part B

  • See Harold at the beach
  • Go under water and see the fish etc
  • Look at things that need air to stay alive
  • Explore pollution and its effects on our lungs
  • Look at second hand smoking and how smoking affects the human body
