Marlborough

Since commencing in May 2006, Marlborough’s mobile classroom has visited some 99% of the Primary and Intermediate Schools in the Marlborough region, including Rai Valley, the Marlborough Sounds, Kaikoura, and in 2010 we extended into the Hurunui region. In Marlborough, our programme is dependant on the support of a small but vital group of local Sponsors whose contributions by way of funding services help us deliver the programme to schools at a highly subsidised rate so that all pupils have the opportunity to attend.

Trustees

Belinda Murray (Chairperson)
I became involved with Life Education from the start when there was an opportunity to look through the Nelson mobile classroom. Being a full time mother of 3 young children I was ready for a new challenge and put my hand up to this fantastic project.  Within 18 months, we had our mobile on the road to the children of Marlborough. I am currently the Chairperson of our Trust and have a fantastic group of Trustees who are incredibly supportive. When I’m not doing Life Education I enjoy watching my children’s sports. Trying to beat them in tennis, I am losing that battle very quickly. We spend as much time as we can in the Marlborough Sounds on our boat, catching a fish or two.

Our Educator: Genevieve McDonald

Hi, I’m the Marlborough/Hurunui Life Education Educator. A little about me: I live just out of Blenheim with my husband, Rob, and we have 2 daughters who are both at university. I love having adventures and travelling in our camper is high on the list. Also included is tramping, jogging, cycling. Both Rob and I love being out on the water especially scuba diving. I also enjoy less active activities like reading and singing. I’ve been a teacher for 26 years – wow how time flies!

Melissa Sinclair (Trustee)

I joined the Marlborough Trust as I felt this is a fantastic way to contribute to the children of Marlborough. I live in Blenheim with my husband and my two small children, where we love the fantastic lifestyle offered by this region and enjoy the sounds, the beautiful weather, and relaxing with a glass of local wine. Prior to being a fulltime Mum I worked as a Sales Analyst Manager in Auckland, before my husband and I moved back to Blenheim.

News and Events

New Zealand King Salmon is a proud sponsor of the Life Education Trust in Marlborough.  They have been working closely with the Trust to ensure that 8 to 13 year olds in Marlborough have the tools to help them focus on healthy living choices.

Together they have developed a mobile classroom resource kit that Marlborough Educator, Genevieve MacDonald, will introduce to more than 50 schools in the Marlborough region this year.

The kit comprises an A1 classroom poster and worksheets that emphasise the health benefits of eating salmon and incorporate curriculum content on Science and Biology, Numeracy, Literacy and Design.

“Our goal is to see every child in our area and make a difference,” says LET Marlborough Trust Chair, Belinda Murray.

“New Zealand King Salmon’s support and the knowledge its people have of both the local area and health and nutrition make for a great partnership to help us help children lead a healthy life.”

The resource kit poster encourages the children to “eat brainy” informing them of the benefits of healthy omega-3 fatty acids contained in the king salmon species farmed in Marlborough.

The reverse of the poster contains worksheets that teachers can photocopy and use in the classroom. They include a human body jigsaw, the life cycle of the king of salmons, healthy plate and human brain worksheets and the health benefits of salmon in the form of a ‘chatterbox’ interactive paper game.

Mock-up product packaging included in the kit is designed to teach children what ingredients to look for as part of their food and nutrition modules.

The trust does a superb job visiting local schools with its resourceful mobile classroom says NZ King Salmon CEO Grant Rosewarne.

“LET provides students and teachers with a raft of excellent resources on living positive, healthy lives and the King salmon kit is designed to help promote those values. We believe we share strong value synergies with the Trust – particularly around health and well-being so it is appropriate for the company to fund a resource that focuses on healthy eating and respect for their bodies,” Mr Rosewarne says.

“We were also delighted to host the LET Marlborough Trustees on a ‘famil’ at our Te Pangu farm so they could see the care and attention we pay to our king of salmons.”

New Zealand King Salmon is a Sponsor of the Life Education Trust in Marlborough. The resource kit has been provided by the company as part of the ongoing relationship between itself and the Trust.
